Sam Chally - Director of Client Development and Co-Owner

Sam Chally graduated with a degree in philosophy from San Francisco State University. A Portland native, he lived and worked for many years in Mexico and Nicaragua, where he was a teacher, Peace Corps volunteer, and Sales Consultant. Sam loves working at Northwest Surrogacy Center (NWSC) and helping families make their dreams come true by helping them bring babies into the world. Sam lives in Bend, Oregon with his wife, two children, and two very active dogs. When he’s not working, Sam enjoys mountain biking and skiing.

Carla Johnson - Marketing and Surrogate Screening

Carla Johnson graduated from Rhodes College with a degree in fine art and anthropology. She worked as a fundraiser for nonprofits in Memphis, Tennessee and Santa Fe, New Mexico before moving to Portland to be near family and enjoy the Pacific Northwest. Carla joined the Northwest Surrogacy Center (NWSC) team in 2013. She loves being able to bike to work, getting to see newborns, and most of all, helping people realize their dream of parenthood. Carla lives in Portland, Oregon with her three daughters, a giant dog, and two cats. They enjoy picking berries, swimming, baking, cycling, making art, and dreaming about summer.

Katy Engberg - Case Management

Katy Engberg studied at the University of Oregon and Portland State University, graduating with degrees in community health education and dance. Prior to joining NWSC in 2014, Katy worked as a yoga teacher at a non-profit organization and interned at the National University for Natural Medicine designing and implementing a resource referral program for community clinic patients. Katy loves witnessing the incredible relationships that are formed through the surrogacy process, and she is humbled by the courage she sees in both surrogates and intended parents.

Michael Chally - Executive Director and Co-Owner

Michael Chally graduated from the International College at the University of Oregon with a degree in Asian Studies. Mike worked in the tech industry for over 15 years designing and building software for both startups and large companies before joining the family business in 2016. Mike and his brother, Sam Chally, work closely with NW Surrogacy Center Founders John Chally and Sandy Hodgson to provide the highest level of service to intended families and surrogates. Mike leads NW Surrogacy Center with a transparent, ethical approach to surrogacy that focuses on relationships, health, success, and well-being. He believes it is a privilege to help families make their dreams come true.

Veronica Bowers - Community Support Manager

Prior to joining Northwest Surrogacy Center, Veronica worked for 10 years as the Director of Travel for an airline and most recently as an event coordinator and community advocate in McMinnville, Oregon. In addition, Veronica regularly volunteers at her kids’ schools, the McMinnville Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, and more. Veronica loves sharing her passion for surrogacy every day. She is an experienced surrogate with NWSC who was worked with families in both France and Australia. Watch the French Documentary “Two Men and a Cradle” about her and the French family! Veronica lives in McMinnville, Oregon with her husband, two children, two dogs, a cat, and six chickens! In her “free” time, she enjoys baking and trying new recipes, traveling the world, and spending time with her family.

After a bad experience of one year with an agency in Canada, we changed and selected Northwest Surrogacy Centre to continue our project of surrogacy. What a great choice it was ! We have used NWSC for two pregnancies with two different surrogates. They are great at what they do and met our needs well. They provide the right level of service and concierge for the price you pay; they seem to keep costs lower by not offering over-the-top services, which was perfect for us. Angel is attentive, shows genuine care, and incredibly detail oriented. As international parents we had to go through a lot of information like contracts and insurance. Whatever questions we had, we could contact Erin our casemanager at NWSC. Moreover, we felt a huge support when there were difficulties during pregnancy. Our baby boy was born healthy and we met some of the staff personally (including Erin) at NWSC to thank them.

As an international parent, I was very lucky to have the Northwest team working with me in the journey of building up my family. The team is highly professional and experienced, they are always able to inform me what is going to happen the next step, so that I could plan ahead. My surrogacy journey happened during the covid period, which made it more difficult to find a surrogate. Northwest team had been doing a great job to manage my expectation and giving me updates on the searching process. Eventually, I had a great, kind-hearted, and highly responsible surrogate mom to work with me. Throughout the journey, my key contact is Amber. (2019, USA Parents) It's hard to say enough good things about Northwest Surrogacy. While they aren't the cheapest option (or the most expensive), I've learned in life that you often get what you pay for. They have been incredibly communicative and helpful from day one. Note that they won't woo you with sweet words about this journey - they will tell you the truth about the risks of various options - it's one of the reasons we chose them (another was the states they work in - OR, CA and CO - if you're going to spend time somewhere during this process, why not stay somewhere nice?. After signing, we waited for maybe six months before being matched with a surrogate, but during that time we found our egg donor and set up our legal framework for doing all this, so the time wasn't wasted at all. We didn't jive with the first surrogate they matched us with, and they were very understanding. The second match was the charm. Our surrogate is now a part of our family forever. She is everything we could have dreamed of and we speak with her almost every week (even one month after the birth). Northwest held our hands every step of the way after she got pregnant, working with the hospital in Bend, OR, sending us little gifts, finding us a night nurse, helping us find a lawyer in France (I'm a dual citizen), offering to help with lodging, and even providing a stroller. They are warm, fair and communicative - can't recommend any business I've ever encountered more highly. They made what could have been a stressful situation into a joyful once in a lifetime experience.

(2019, International parents) We would not recommend NWSC. We have completed two journeys. Our first journey was with NWSC and our second was with All Families Surrogacy (AFS). Throughout our journey with NWSC we were made to feel like a number and we are unable to justify the high agency fees they charge. After giving them our match criteria, matching time was stated as 6 months but we took longer than 13 months to reach our first match meeting. The matching process was questionable and they even matched us with a surrogate who 'later' decided she did not want to work with same sex parents, even before any match meeting. There was minimal assistance after matching, with our case coordinator asking our surrogate how the twins were doing, just 1 week before delivery, even though we had only transferred one blastocyst and a singleton pregnancy was confirmed in the first trimester. When there were issues, at times it took more than three weeks to get an email response from them. We would only recommend them if you anticipate no complexities throughout your surrogacy journey (however we know how surrogacy can be unpredictable) and can manage everything yourselves locally. Some advantages of NWSC is that they are large and therefore deal with more surrogates and they made no mistakes with accounting. The other good point about NWSC is that they are better than AFS which is much worse. Avoid NWSC if possible.

When our first surrogate just didn't work out after multiple transfer attempts, NWSC matched us as quickly as possible with a new, great surrogate who became pregnant on the first attempt and carried our daughter to term. My husband and I felt that we were in great hands through all the ups and downs of the process. I definitely hope others have a smoother journey to parenthood, but either way I'd highly recommend NWSC.

(2018, USA parents) NWSC is a large and impersonal organization that takes little interest in the wellbeing of IP's. Our first case manager was so unempathic and unsupportive that we fired her and asked for another. While our second case manager was more personable she made several very expensive, careless errors with medical payments that were caught adn corrected by us. When we lost one twin and the other was born very early, they sent our surrogate flowers but said nothing to us - they just went silent. It took nearly a year after the birth to sort out all the payment errors and close our account with them. Maybe we were just unlucky but we will not use them again. They are pricey, impersonal, and the staff are hit or miss.

The other aspects of the journey, as well as the clarity of information and transparency of money requests and their timing was not as we would have hoped. In all honesty I am not sure what the $23000 agency fee actually bought us, as our surrogate did the majority of the assistance we received.

The surrogate that we met through this agency went far beyond our expectations in terms of communication and kindness. She is one of the finest people we've ever met, and I have to credit the agency for matching us. If we had one complaint, it would be the lack of clarity and communication regarding the post-birth business - particularly the agreement and facilitation of purchasing breast milk from our surrogate. We wish we had received more guidance and clarity as to how that process should work, and how much it would cost. As well, getting health insurance for our son as gay dads, without a birth certificate and social security number has been a slightly harrowing experience. And though most of the bureaucracy resides in the legal system, we wish we'd been more prepared for that. Our coordinator took us smoothly through obstacles on the way: dealing with switching insurances (Kaiser stopped coverage for surrogacy mid-pregnancy), helping us take better care of our surrogate mother, and helping with any details of travel, insurance, medical and legal.
